I remember seeing this in the cinema upon release in London and watching this again is like a classic slice of 70's cinema.
What the special effects lack the cast makes up in warmth, character and charm. Who else CAN be Superman since Reeve and be AS good. They have already tried to reboot this once, and even golden boy Brian Singer couldn't get it right.
Reeve and Kidder are so brilliant together its just a perfect screen partnership. The helicopter sequence alone still has the power to suspend and believe.
Of course this is mostly the starter before the main course (the second film) but for an older generation it still wins on multiple levels over number II.
The main dissapointment with the Blu-Ray release is that it seems to use the same master as the DVD releases, so its not really HD picture material, in fact at times it looks terrible. The sound on those DVD's was excellent though, and this continues the trend by offering a DTS-MA track. Bombastic!
