Jeff Bridges is a legend, I couldn't give a toss what anyone says, the man makes acting look easy. His portrails of down-on-their-lucks is peerless, and the lack of vanity in his appearence and actions is refreshingly brilliant. Not everything is perfect, and that shines though amazingly well.
Its a no brainer that his performance in this too is brillant, its just a shame that no one else's was. I thought about this after the film finished, and I think there are certain scenes that are missing from this film that could tie up some odd links.
Most difficult to read is the character played by Maggie Gyllenhaal. I'm not sure it was her acting that let the side down, rather the character she was playing was complex (or so it seemed) and a lot of things the watcher had to fill in for. No bad thing usually, after all we like intelligent films, but here is just felt their where no subconcious plot discoveries to be found, she was just a half-coloured character, and for that the film suffered.
It also suffers because it doesn't particually end the way you think it is going to. It is almost like there is another ending on the cutting room floor somewhere, and that was removed because test audiences hated it.
A shame really, this could of been special. Its still worth a watch, but like True Grit, it is just a watch-once rental rather than an own.
